Mit der Betriebseröffnung Raleigh-Gaston (am Roanoke River) im April 1840 war dies die zweite Eisenbahn im Staat North Carolina (nur die Wilmington & Raleigh RR war gerade mal einen Monat schneller). 1851 reorganisiert, 1852 Verlängerung bis Weldon (Gesamtlänge nun 97 Meilen). 1900 Fusion mit der Seaboard Air Line RR, damit am Ende Teil des Southern-Railway-Systems geworden (heute CSX Transportation).
