Schon 1930 besaß AVCO ungefähr 85 kleinere Airlines, die ein den Kontinent übergreifendes Netzwerk bildeten, dass allerdings weder verbunden, noch aufeinander abgestimmt war. Mit der Hoffnung, diese Struktur zu konsolidieren, gründete AVCO 1930 American Airways. 1934 zwangen neue Post-Bestimmungen AVCO dazu, ihren Flugzeugbau- und Fluggesellschafts-Konzern aufzuteilen. Als Resultat entstanden American Airlines, die durch Aktientausch American Airways kauften.
