Gegründet in den 1820er Jahren von John Edmund Ligggett's Großvater Christopher Foulks, 1858 Umbenennung in J. E. Liggett and Borther. 1869 Produktion der ersten Blend-Zigaretten mit Tabak aus der Türkei und aus Virigia. 1873 kam es zu einer Partnerschaft mit George Smith Myers aus Missouri, Umbenennung in The Ligget & Myers Tobacco Co., nunmehr als Aktiengesellschaft. Bekannte Marken: Chesterfield, L&M, Eve. 1980 Übernahme durch die englische Grand Metropolitan PLC und Weiterverkauf 1986 an den Finanzier, Immobilien-Investor und Tabak-Magnaten Bennett S. LeBow. 1995-1996 versuchte die Liggett Group erfolglos, die viel größere R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. zu übernehmen. 1999 Verkauf der Marken L&M, Lark und Chesterfield an Philip Morris Companies Inc.
