Insgesamt 330 bis in das Jahr 1849 zurückreichende Bahngesellschaften wurden so im Laufe der Zeit zum zu dieser Zeit größten Eisenbahn-System der USA verschmolzen mit 23.537 Meilen Streckenlänge zwischen Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Seattle und Portland. 1980 kam durch Fusion noch die St. Louis-San Francisco Ry. zu dem BN-System hinzu.
