Der Ausbruch des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges verhinderte aber jahrelang den Beginn der Bahnbauarbeiten. Erst 1872 nahm die 1871 als Auffanggesellschaft gegründete Arkansas Central Ry. ein 48 Meilen langes Teilstück bis Clarendon, Ark. in Betrieb. 1877 ging die Bahn erneut pleite und wurde als Arkansas Midland RR reorganisiert.
