Avilés ist die zweitgrößte Industriestadt Asturirens und lebte damals vor allem vom Bergbau und ihrem Hafen. Ein vom 1. Weltkrieg angefachter Boom führte 1916 zur Elektrifizierung der Straßenbahn von Avilés, 1933/59 wurde sie stillgelegt.
