Hauptstrecke: Fort Monroe, Va. nach Covington, Ky. (660 Meilen). Ende der 1870er Jahre unter die Kontrolle von Collis P. Huntington gekommen (einer der „Big Four Railroad Barons“), der die C&O dann mit seiner Newport News & Mississippi Valley RR zusammenlegte. Kurz nach der Wende zum 20. Jh. umfasste das Streckennetz der C&O bereits über 1.800 Meilen.
