Zu der Zeit betrug die Gesamtbevölkerung des Elsaß rd. 1,5 Mio. Menschen. Gut 100.000 von ihnen wollten nicht Reichsdeutsche werden, sondern Franzosen bleiben. Sie verließen das Elsaß, viele von ihnen fanden im damals französischen Protektorat Algerien eine neue Heimat.
