Daraus entstand 1911 die AB Ethyl, die Alkohol aus Sulfitzellstoff-Rückständen herstellte. Im 1. Weltkrieg erlangte das Verfahren als Ersatz für das knapp werdende Benzin besondere Bedeutung. Die AB Ethyl gehörte 1918 zu den Gründern der AB Spritmotorer, die speziell für den Spirituseinsatz konstruierte Motoren, Vergaser und Automobile herstellen sollte.
