Der Name ist irreführend: Die Gesellschaft betrieb gar keine Straßenbahn (Tramway), sondern ein 25 Meilen langes Netz schmalspuriger Bergwerksbahnen (Spurweite 2 ft.) zwischen den Goldminen im Tal des Clear Creek oberhalb von Black Hawk (wo John H. Gregory 1859 mit der Gregory Lode das reichste Goldvorkommen der Gegend entdeckt hatte) zu den Hüttenwerken in Black Hawk und Central City. Große Höhenunterschiede waren zu überwinden: Keine andere Eisenbahn Amerikas hatte mehr Kehrweichen als die Gilpin Tramway; der Rekord lag bei sieben Kehrweichen nur um eine einzige Mine zu erreichen. 1906 in Gilpin Railroad umbenannt.
