place: | New York, N.Y. | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 16 | | Info: | Der etwa 100 Meilen lange Kanal durch das Genesee Valley wurde vom Staat New York 1838-40 unter Verwendung eines Teils des schon bestehenden Scottsville Canal gebaut. 1861 wurde die Kanalschifffahrt eingestellt, 1878 wurde der Kanal komplett außer Betrieb genommen und 1880 an diese neu gegründete Bahngesellschaft verkauft. Die bekam damit ohne großen Aufwand die perfekte, nur gleichmäßig und sanft ansteigende Trasse für ihre Eisenbahn von Olean am Delaware River nach Rochester N.Y. Der Bahnbau begann 1880, 1883 ging die Eisenbahn in Betrieb. Später kam die Strecke zur Buffalo, New York & Philadelphia RR, dann zur Western New York & Pennsylvania RR, zuletzt die Rochester Branch der Allegany Division der Pennsylvania RR. | | Condition: | EF-VF | | Sold: | unsold |
