Varney und Louis H. Mueller als „Varney Speed Lines“. Zuvor hatte Varney seit 1926 schon die Postfluggesellschaft Varney Air Lines besessen, die er 1927 an Boeing Air Transport verkaufte und die das Urspungsunternehmen von United Airlines ist. Varney Speed Lines gewann die staatliche Ausschreibung für Postflüge zwischen Pueblo, Col. und El Paso, Tx. und nahm am 15.7.1934 mit vier Lockheed Vega den Flugbetrieb auf. 1937 dann in Continental Airlines umbenannt. 1946 wurden bereits 29 Städte angeflogen, und die Expansion ging immer weiter. Die Übernahme von People Express, einer der ersten Billigfluggesellschaften, die auch London-Gatwick anflog, öffnete Continental das Tor nach Europa. Die Chapter-11-Insolvenzen 1983 und 1990 ließ Continental erfolgreich hinter sich und überstand als finanzstärkste US-Fluggesellschaft auch die Terroranschläge des 11.9.2001 am besten.
