Durch Streuen falscher Gerüchte in den Zeiten der Großen Depression versammelten sich am 10. Dezember 1930 um die 20.000 Menschen vor der Bronx-Filiale, um ihr Geld abzuheben. Ein Polizei-Einsatz war notwendig geworden. In den nächsten Tagen wurden weitere Filialen belagert, sodass sich das Direktorium zum Schließen der ganzen Bank entschloss. Die Situation entspannte sich jedoch nicht mehr. Eine Vielzahl weiterer Banken erlitt das gleiche Schicksal.
