Der Streckenbau begann 1836 in Detroit. 1837 wurde die Bahn an den neu gegründeten Bundesstaat Michigan verkauft, der sie in „Central Railroad of Michigan“ umbenannte. Für damals sagenhafte 2 Mio. Dollar wurde die Bahn 1846 erneut verkauft an die neu gegründete „Michigan Central Rail Road Co.“ Die folgenden Jahrzehnte überstand die M.C.R.R. im Gegensatz zu so gut wie allen anderen US-Bahngesellschaften ohne jede Reorganisation. Im Laufe der Zeit kaufte sie noch ein gutes Dutzend weitere Bahnen auf, die sie 1916 durch Verschmelzung komplett absorbierte. So entstand ein über 1.800 Meilen Streckenlänge umfassendes Netz mit der 270 Mailen langen Hauptstrecke Detroit, Mich. nach Kensington, Ill. Zuletzt Teil des mächtigen New-York-Central-Systems. | | Specials: | Schöne feine Stahlstich-Vignette mit Schafhirte, Eisenbahn, Allegorie. Ausgestellt auf F.W. Vanderbilt (1856-1938) und u.a. so auf die Trustees der Vanderbilt Clinic of the College of Physicians & Surgeans of N.Y. und auf dem Transferzertifikat von ihm original signiert.
