Schon die Fusion 1863 der Milwaukee & Prairie du Chien RR mit der Milwaukee & St. Paul RR (letzterer Name wurde als Ry. beibehalten) erbrachte ein für die damalige Zeit sehr bedeutendes System mit über 1.000 Meilen Streckenlänge. Nach dem Kauf der Chicago & St. Paul RR 1874 umbenannt in “Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Ry.” Durch ständige Zukäufe dehnte sich die Bahn durch Minnesota, Dakota, Montana, Idaho und Washington immer weiter nach Westen aus und erreichte schließlich in Seattle den Pazifik. Über 10.000 Meilen umfaßte das Streckennetz nun.
