Das (im Gegensatz zum dunkleren und dickflüssigeren Erdöl) farblose oder wenig gelblich gefärbte dünnflüssige Naphta (vom Persischen nafata, ausschwitzen) trat am Kaspischen Meer seit alters her von allein an die Oberfläche, was die wirtschaftliche Nutzung der Quellen besonders einfach machte. Betrieben wurden zuletzt 9 Naphtawerke am Kaspischen Meer und drei Umschlaganlagen in den Häfen von Bibi-Eibat, Zyk und Baku. Dem Verwaltungsrat der Ges. gehörte u.a. Alexej Iwanowitsch Putilow an, der berühmte Bankier, Financier und Spekulant, genannt der “russische Krupp”.
