Seinen Namen hatte er davon, daß an seiner Mündung an zwei Stellen Erdgas austrat. Schon 1781 beschrieb Thomas Jefferson die helle Flamme, die es gab, wenn man eine brennende Kerze in das Gas warf. Da Gas und Salz oft zusammen auftraten, brachten die Brüder Rathborne 1859 auf der Suche nach Salz dort eine Bohrung nieder. Doch statt auf Salz trafen sie in 200 Fuß Tiefe auf Petroleum; die Bohrung lieferte 200 barrel am Tag. Ein zweites Bohrloch lieferte sogar 1.200 barrel. So entstand das erste von nur zwei in den USA schon vor dem Sezessionskrieg erschlossenen Ölfelder; um 1861 war an der Stelle bereits eine Stadt mit mehreren tausend Einwohnern entstanden, in der natürlich alles mit Gas beleuchtet wurde. | | Specials: | Drei tolle Vignetten mit Ölfeld, Mann beim Bändigen eines Pferdes und Eisenbahn. | | Availability: | Unentwertet.
