Die bedeutende Eisenbahnges., im Volksmund “Katy” genannt, geriet 1880 unter die Kontrolle des berüchtigten Jay Gould und wurde von ihm bis 1888 finanziell bis zum Bankrott ausgeplündert. 1891 übernahm eine Gruppe unter der Leitung von John D. Rockefeller die Bahn, die sie innerhalb kurzer Zeit zu einer führenden Eisenbahngesellschaft im Süden der USA ausgebaut haben.
