Namensgeber war George Peabody (1795-1869), der 1815 mit seinem Partner Elisha Rigg seinen Haushaltswaren-Großhandel von Washington nach Baltimore verlegte und dort bis 1830 zu einem der größten Handelshäuser in den ganzen USA aufstieg. 1835 rettete er den Staat Maryland durch eine 8-Mio.$-Anleihe, die er in London arrangierte, vor dem Staatsbankrott.
