Die Gesellschaft erhielt vom Kongress umfangreiche Landschenkungen unter der Bedingungen, dass die über 700 Meilen lange Strecke binnen 6 Jahre fertigzustellen war - das gelang auch. Bis zur Jahrhundertwende wuchs das Streckennetz auf fast 2.000 Meilen mit den Hauptlinien Centralia, Ill. nach Dubuque, Iowa (340 Meilen), Chicago-Cairo, Ill. (364 Meilen) und weiter von Cairo nach New Orleans (548 Meilen). Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg (die beiden wichtigsten Strecken verliefen jetzt von Chicago nach New Orleans sowie nach Sioux Falls und Omaha, Neb.) wurde die Firmenstruktur deutlich vereinfacht und ein knappes Dutzend Tochterbahnen eingegliedert. 1972 Fusion mit der Gulf, Mobile & Ohio RR zur Illinois Central Gulf RR.
