Phelps, einen Direktor der Delaware, Lackawanna & western Ry., zur Übernahme eines Teils der Avondale Colliery in Plymouth, Pa. (zwischen dem Susquehanna River und der Shawnee-Bergkette gelegen). Grund war, daß die von 1854 datierende Charter der Eisenbahn ihr Recht auf Bergwerksbesitz limitierte, was man so umging. Die Steuben Coal wurde dann Teil der Naticoke Coal & Iron Co., die mit der D.L.&W. in Personalunion geführt wurde. 1869 brach im Förderschacht der Avondale Mine ein Feuer aus und breitete sich bis über Tage in den Kohlenbrecher aus. Die 108 in der Mine eingeschlossenen Bergleute kamen ohne Ausnahme zu Tode. Ab 1914 betrieb die D.L.&W. das Bergwerk direkt, 1935 legte es der letzte Besitzer (die Glen Alden Coal Co.) still. | | Specials: | Mit Originalunterschrift John C. Phelps.
