Bereits 1846 wurde die Lehigh Valley RR gegründet, die zuerst mit einem bedeutenden Netz den Kohletransport in Pennsylvania beherrschte, später Teil von Conrail wurde, heute wird das was von der L.V.R.R. noch übrig ist von der Norfolk Southern betrieben. Die Reading, die die L.V.R.R. ab 1892 gepachtet hatte, übernahm sich finanziell und löste 1893 eine Panik an den Finanzmärkten aus. Es brauchte dann unter der Regie von J. P.
