Der einige Kilometer tiefe Foret Domaniale de Marly-le-Roi trennt hier den urbanisierten Großraum der Unité urbaine von Paris vom ländlichen Umland. Die Einwohnerschaft hatte viel gehobenes Klientel (so ab 1836 auch den Dichter Victor Hugo mit einer Sommerresidenz), was dann auch früh eher elitäre Sportarten wie Golf und Tennis hierher brachte.
