Ein 1853 vom Staat New York erlassenes Gesetz erlaubte die Fusion der A.&S.RR. mit neun anderen Bahngesellschaften zur New York Central RR. Am gegenüberliegenden Ufer des Hudson River führte von Albany nach New York die Hudson River RR. Die Fusion beider Gesellschaften (in denen "Commodore" Vanderbilt der mächtige Mann war) begründete das gewaltige New-York-Central-System mit fast 3.000 Meilen Streckenlänge. Zuletzt entstand 1968 durch Fusion mit der Pennsylvania RR die PennCentral, das mächtigste System der Ostküste überhaupt mit rd. 20.000 Meilen Streckenlänge.
