Big Stone Gap heißt der Ort nach einem die Appalachen durchschneidenden Tal, vorher war er auch als „Mineral City“ und „Three Forks“ bekannt. Lange hatte die Stadt gehofft, daß die Kohle- und Eisenerz-Vorkommen der Gegend sie zum „Pittsburgh des Südens“ machen würden.
