Ursprünglich gegründet 1877 als Kohlenbahn für die Imperial Coal Co. Das erste Teilstück wurde auf Veranlassung der Imperial Coal Co. 1877 von der Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Line gebaut und führte von Montour Jct. nahe Coraopolis zum Anthrazitkohlen-Tagebau der Imperial Coal Co. in Imperial, Pa. 1901 übernahm die Pittsburgh Coal Co. die Kontrolle. Die größte Ausdehnung des Streckennetzes war 1912, bedingt durch Inbetriebnahmen weiterer neuer Kohlenminen und Fabriken. 1917 wurde die Stadt West Mifflin, Pa. erreicht. 1946 verkaufte die Pittsburgh Coal Co. die Montour RR an die Pennsylvania RR und die Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR (Teil der New York Central).
