Info:Urspünglich konzessioniert 1854 zum Bau einer Bahn von Newport oder Covington (gegenüber von Cincinnati am Ohio River) durch Zentral-Kentucky, die dann bei Big Stone Gap an die Virginia & Tennessee RR anschließen sollte. Mit der Strecke wollte man reiche Holz- und Kohlevorräte im Osten des Staates Kentucky erschließen. Der Ausbruch des Bürgerkriegs brachte das Projekt zum Erliegen, 1872 wurde die „Railway“ als „Railroad“ reorganisiert (mit einer Konzession für die 100 Meilan lange Bahn Lexington-Jackson, Ky.), und erst 1884/85 baute man tatsächlich die ersten 15 Meilen von Winchester nach Clay City (einem Sammelpunkt für Baumstämme, die den Red River heruntergeflößt wurden). Als die Bahn endlich 1891 bis Jackson fertig war, ging sie auch gleich pleite und wurde 1894 als Lexington & Eastern Ry. reorganisiert. Diese wurde 1910 an die Louisville & Nashville RR verkauft, was allerdings jahrelang geheim gehalten wurde, damit das dadurch entstandene Monopol im Kohletransport nicht öffentlich wurde. In den 1950er Jahren wurden Teile der Strecke stillgelegt, der Rest ging 1983 an das Seaboard System und 1986 an CSX. Seit 2003 wird das Teilstück Bryan Station-Winchester der alten Kentucky Union von der Privatbahn R. J. Corman Railroad Group betrieben.
