Als 1888 die ersten Diktiergeräte auf den Markt erschienen, ärgerte sich Bettini über die schlechte Wiedergabequalität und versuchte sich an Verbesserungen. 1890 wurden von ihm entwickelte Tonköpfe patentiert. 1891 eröffnete Bettini ein Studio an der 5th Avenue und nahm dort die Stimmen berühmter Künstler auf (Sarah Bernardt, Yvette Guilbert, Tomaso Salvini u.v.a.). 1892 ließ er sich einen Phonographenpatentieren und wurde damit zum Konkurrenten von Edison und Columbia. In der Zeitung “Le Phonoscope” las er, daß Pathe in Paris Nachbauten seiner Produkte verkaufte.
