Info:Gegründet 1905 zwecks Reorganisation der Detroit Southern RR (diese entstanden 1901 durch Fusion der Detroit & Lima Northern RR mit der Ohio Southern Ry.), zugleich Erwerb der Ann Arbor RR, womit sich das bestehende Streckennetz der früheren Detroit Southern praktisch verdoppelte. Streckennetz von insgesamt 400 Meilen Länge mit den drei Hauptstrecken Delray-Dundee, Mich. (40 Meilen), Napoleon-Jackson, Ohio (229 Meilen) und Bloom-Ironton, Ohio (31 Meilen). Bereits 1908 wurde auch die D.T.&I.Ry. zahlungsunfähig, konnte ihren Betrieb aber aufrecht erhalten, bis sie schließlich 1920 von HENRY FORD gekauft wurde. Die Bahn hatte für Ford strategische Bedeutung, da sie seine Fabriken in Dearborn, Mich. mit sämtlichen großen in Ost-West-Richtungen verlaufenden Hauptbahnen im Mittleren Westen verband. Damit erlangte Ford die unmittelbare Kontrolle über Materiallieferungen an seine Fabriken und den Abtransport fertiger Automobile. Entnervt von ständigen Eingriffen der Interstate Commerce Commission (einer Art Kartellbehörde) warf Ford 1929 das Handtuch und verkaufte die Bahn an die Pennsylvania RR. Dort war sie jahrzehntelang eine eigenständige Tochterfirma, zuletzt der Penn Central. Nach dem Penn-Central-Konkurs 1970 ging die D.T.&I.RR. erst an private Investoren und 1980 schließlich an die Grand Trunk Western RR. Einzelne Streckenteile sind bis heute in Betrieb.
