In den 1950er Jahren wurde er General Manager und Partner beim The Mint Las Vegas. 1962 übernahm er mit seinem Sohn Bill (der das Unternehmen noch heute leitet) das Eldorado Casino in Henderson, Nev. Boyd Gaming wurde 1975 mit 75 Investoren gegründet, um das California Hotel und Casino im Zentrum von Las Vegas zu übernehmen. Später erwies sich Sam Boyd als die ehrlichste Haut in einer von Betrug und Geldwäsche durchseuchten Branche. Er erlangte nicht nur das volle Vertrauen von Investoren, sondern auch der „Nevada Gaming Commission“.
