Das hinter der holländischen Grenze liegende 7 km lange Teilstück nach Enschede wurde von den Niederlanden 1928 verstaatlicht, der AG blieb die 13 km lange Strecke Ahaus-Landesgrenze. 1966 wurde der Personenverkehr eingestellt. Die Betriebsführung hatte die Bentheimer Eisenbahn, Zugförderung (nachdem die eigene Diesellok 1967 verkauft worden war) später durch die Bundesbahn. 1988 Aufgabe des Bahnbetriebes, 1995 Umfirmierung in AEE Lebensmittel AG (Süßwarenindustrie, Vermarktung von Frischfisch).
