Ursprünglich war die Stadt ein Verbannungsort der Dekabristen. Erst mit der Transsibirischen Eisenbahn begann sich die Stadt industriell zu entwickeln. Die mit englischem und französischem Kapital finanzierte Tchita-Nertchinsk Co. bezweckte nicht nur an dem ansetzenden Goldrun teilzunehmen, sondern die ganze Region entlang der Grenze zu China und Mongolei forst- und landwirtschaftlich nutzen.
