Die Schmalspurbahn von Gera über Wuitz nach Mumsdorf (31,2 km) diente vor allem dem Abtransport der Braunkohle aus dem Meuselwitzer Revier. Ständig am Rande des Ruins überlebte die Bahn doch bis lange nach dem Weltkrieg. Wegen des vorrückenden Braunkohle-Tagebaus fuhr die Bahn nur noch durch entvölkerte Landschaften, weshalb sie später den Beinamen "Geisterbahn" erhielt.
