Ursprüngliche Funktion der Internationalen Bank für Wiederaufbau und Entwicklung war die Finanzierung des Wiederaufbaus des durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörten Europa. Als 1948 der dem gleichen Ziel dienende Marshallplan in Kraft trat, definierte die Weltbank ihre Aufgabe neu und finanziert seitdem Entwicklungsprojekte in der ganzen Welt vornehmlich in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern.
