Namenspatron war Lodewijk Elsevier, der im 16. Jh. in Rotterdam einen Bücherverlag aufbaute. 1937 Joint venture mit Nordesmann Publishing Co. und Aufbau einer eigenen Niederlassung in New York. 1951 Gründung der Elsevier Press Inc. in Houston, Texas. Ab 1955 eigene Papierproduktion mit einer Papierfabrik in Neuseeland (ab 1960 auch in Kanada). 1962 Gründung der U.S. Elsevier Publishing Co. und kurz danach der UK Elsevier Publishing Co.
