Schon im Altertum wurde mehrfach (z.B. von Nero) der Durchstich zwischen dem Golf von Korinth und dem Golf von Ägina projektiert. 1881-82 begann die Soc. Internationale du Canal Maritime de Corinthe S.A. mit dem Bau des Kanals. Die Soc. Hellénique du Canal de Corinthe führte ab 1890 die Arbeiten fort, nachdem der Vorgängergesellschaft das Geld ausgegangen war. 1893 wurde der Kanal eröffnet.
