Info:Keimzelle ist die schon 1837 gegründete Northern Cross RR, die die Stadt Jacksonville, Ill. mit dem Illinois River verband und aus der später die Great Western RR hervorging. Letztere fusionierte 1865 mit der Quincy & Toledo RR, der Toledo & Wabash RR, der Illinois & Southern Iowa RR und der Wabash & Western Ry. zur Toledo, Wabash & Western Ry. Die Strecken durchquerten die Staaten Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri und Iowa. Es war die erste Bahngesellschaft mit einer durchgehenden Verbindung vom Eriesee zum Mississippi, weshalb die Bahn mit ihrem schließlich über 4.000 km langen Streckennetz zum Bindeglied zwischen den Bahngesellschaften des Ostens und des Westens wurde. 1875 in Konkurs gegangen, 1877 als Wabash Ry. reorganisiert. Danach geriet die Gesellschaft in die Fänge übler Eisenbahnspekulanten, allen voran Jay Gould, wurde aufgespalten und kam erst 1889 mit der erneuten Fusion zur Wabash RR einigermaßen zur Ruhe. 1911 erneuter Bankrott, 1915 zum dritten Mal unter dem Namen Wabash Railway reorganisiert, nach einer weiteren Pleite 1937 ein zweites Mal unter dem Namen Wabash Railroad reorganisiert. 1964 an die Norfolk & Western RR verpachtet. Mit deren Rechtsnachfolger Norfolk Southern Ry. schließlich 1991 komplett fusioniert.
