Gebaut wurden anfangs nur zwei kleine Strecken: von Franklin (später Pacific) nach Dillon (71 Meilen, fertig 1860) und Rolla (6 Meilen, fertig 1861). Neu konzessioniert 1866 durch einen “Act of Congress” für den Bau einer 2.000 Meilen langen Bahn von Springfield, Missouri zum Pazifik parallel zum 35. Breitengrad.
