Gegründet 1877 als Kohlenbahn für die Imperial Coal Co. Der erste Teil wurde von der Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Line von Montour Junction, nahe Coraopolis zur Imperial Coal Co. in Imperial, Penns. errichtet. 1901 übernahm die Pittsburgh Coal Co. die Kontrolle. Die größte Ausbreitung fand 1912 statt, um die neuen Kohlenminen und Fabriken zu erreichen. 1917 wurde die Stadt West Mifflin, Penns. erreicht. 1946 verkaufte die Pittsburgh Coal Co. die Montour RR an die Pennsylvania RR und die Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR (Teil der New York Central).
