Initiator ist der Mainzer Bankier Isaac Fulda. Seine Idee wird zum Geschäftszweck der Gesellschaft: im gesamten Reichsgebiet das Kautionsgeschäft zu betreiben. 1937 Umfirmierung in Rheinische Garantie & Kautionsversicherungs-AG. Den größten Teil der Aktien halten zu Beginn der 50er Jahre die Müchener Rück und die Agrippina. Anfang der 60er Ausweitung des Aktionärskreises, Umbenennung in Allgemeine Kreditversicherung AG. 1996 kauft REWE den Aktienbesitz der Allianz und hält 87,5% des Aktienkapitals. 1996 übernimmt die Coface S.A. Paris 50% von REWE. Ab 2002 dann Allgemeine Kreditversicherung Coface AG.
