Der große Bedarf führte 1782 zur Einführung des Leblanc’schen Verfahrens. Dieses wurde später durch den Ammoniaksodaprozeß (Solvayprozeß) verdrängt, den der Chemiker E. Solvay aus Brüssel erfunden hatte. Er bildete die Grundlage eines bis heute weltbedeutenden Chemiekonzerns mit Tochterfirmen in allen Erdteilen.
