Mit der Erfindung des elektromagnetischen Telefons durch G. Bell (1876) und des Kohlemikrofons durch Th. A. Edison (1877) und D.E. Hughes (1878) erfuhr die Fernsprechtechnik einen enormen Aufschwung. Von großem Nutzen für die Entwicklung war das bereits bestehende Netz von Telegrafenleitungen, auf das sich die neue Technik stützen konnte.
