Der Bau begann 1836 in Detroit. 1837 wurde die Bahn an den neugegründeten Staat Michigan verkauft, der eine Umbenennung in Central Railroad of Michigan vornahm. Für 2 Millionen Dollar wurde die Bahn 1846 erneut verkauft und als Michigan Central Railroad neu gegründet. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte wurden ein gutes Dutzend weitere Bahnen aufgekauft und 1916 durch Verschmelzung ganz aufgesogen. So entstand ein über 1.800 Meilen Streckenlänge umfassendes Netz mit der Hauptstrecke Detroit, Mich. nach Kensington, Ill. (270 Meilen).
