Info:1839 begann Franz Stollwerck in Köln mit der Herstellung von Hustenbonbons, an 1860 auch Schokoladenproduktion. 1871 Gründung der Fa. Gebr. Stollwerck zur Industrialisierung der Schokoladenproduktion. Vor allem der zweitjüngste der Brüder, Ludwig Stollwerck, begeisterte sich für technische Neuerungen und stellte ab 1887 Verkaufsautomaten für Schokolade auf. 1894 gründete er zusammen mit dem deutschen Kaufmann John Volkmann die Fa. Volkmann, Stollwerck & Co., die in New York eine Fabrik für Verkaufsautomaten eröffnete. Allein auf New Yorker Bahnhöfen standen Anfang der 1890er Jahre über 4.000 ihrer Automaten. Parallel dazu enstand Ende des 19. Jh. die Stollwerck-Tochter Stollwerck Bros. Inc. im Staat Massachusetts, die schon um 1900 zum zweitgrößten Schokoladenhersteller der USA aufgestiegen war. Deren Geschäfte übernahm in Folge der Enteignungen durch die Siegermächte nach dem 1. Weltkrieg die Stollwerck Chocolate Co.
