Info:Captain John Hamilton Brown wurde 1894 für die Erfindung der “Brown Segmental Wire Gun” gefeiert, einer Kanone, die alle bekannten Armierungen dieser Zeit zu durchschlagen vermochte, selbst Stahlpanzerungen. Grund war die hohe Abfeuerungsgeschwindigkeit von über 3.000 Fuß pro Sekunde (rd. 3.600 km/h), die über 50 % höher war als bei allen bis dahin bekannten Kanonentypen. Diese wiederum wurde erreicht einerseits mit einem speziellen Schießpulver von DuPont und andererseits dadurch, daß die Kanone wegen der starken Ummantelung aus flexiblen Drahtsegmenten im Inneren des Geschützrohrs auch einem gewaltigen beim Feuern entstehenden Druck zu widerstehen vermochte, der jedes andere Geschützrohr zum Bersten gebracht hätte. Nach mehreren erfolgreichen Testläufen auf dem Versuchsgelände der Armee gründete Brown dann 1903 seine eigene Geschützfabrik, die mit einem Kapital von 10 Mio. $ ausgestattet war.
