Nach dem Erfolg eines nach den Plänen des schwedischen Ingenieurs Nordenfelt 1885 erbauten U-Boots entwickelte die französische Marine großen Eifer beim Bau von Unterseebooten. In rascher Folge entstanden in Frankreich U-Boote verschiedenster Größen (zwischen 70 und 400 t) mit Dampfmaschinen oder Petrolmotoren. Der Adelige Piatti dal Pozzo war einer ihrer Konstrukteure. 1900 nahmen die USA den U-Boot-Bau auf, 1902 England, 1906 stellte die deutsche Kriegsmarine das erste U-Boot in Dienst.
