Anfang der 20er Jahre eröffnete eine bedeutende Erweiterung der Produktion den Weg zum Massen-Hersteller. In den letzten Jahren lieferte sich FIAT mit VW einen ständigen Kampf um die Spitzenposition auf dem europäischen Markt. Meist gewinnt VW, doch FIAT kann sich rühmen, mit über 100 Jahren die wesentlich längere Automobil-Tradition zu besitzen. Zum FIAT-Konzern gehörte u.a. auch die Edelmarke Lamborghini sowie Alfa Romeo. Ende der 1990er Jahre beteiligte sich General Motors an der FIAT-Autosparte.
