Info:Titanit ist ein häufig vorkommendes Mineral aus der Klasse der Silikate und Germanate. Es kristallisiert in monoklinen Kristallsystemen und ist in reinem Zustand farblos. Je nach Fundort kann es durch Beimengungen von Uran, Thorium (Thornpulver) oder Radium schwach radioaktiv sein. Erstmals gefunden wurde Titanit 1795 in den Hauzenberger Graphitgruben im Bayerischen Wald. Ein berühmter historischer Fundpunkt ist auch der Plauensche Grund zwischen Dresden und Freital. Größere Vorkommen dienen als Rohstoff zur Herstellung von Titandioxid (dem mit einer Weltjahresproduktion von 5 Mio. t heute bedeutendsten Weißpigment, das sogar in jeder Zahnpasta zu finden ist), ansonsten werden klare Kristalle in der Schmuckindustrie verarbeitet und dienen im Facettenschliff vor allem als Diamantenersatz. In der Pulvermetallurgie wird Ferro-Titanit eingesetzt, wenn selbst höchstlegierte Stähle die gestellten Anforderungen nicht mehr erfüllen können. Die Gründung dieser Gewerkschaft (unter Ausnutzung des liberalen Bergrechts von Sachsen-Weimar pro forma belehnt auf dem Eisenstein-Bergwerk Eiserne Hand IX im Tabarzer Forst, Bergamt Ohrdruf) im Jahr 1905 eilte der kommerziellen Nutzung von Titanit im industriellen Maßstab allerdings voraus: Die hervorragende Eigenschaft von Titandioxid als Weißpigment wurde nämlich erst 1908 in Norwegen und den USA entdeckt, zuvor war das Mineral weitgehend nutzlos.
