Info:Gegründet 1856 von Rudolf Ley im thüringischen Arnstadt, AG seit 22.6.1909. Hergestellt wurden zunächst Nähmaschinen, dann Maschinen für die Schuhfabrikation (1886 Vorstellung der ersten patentierten Schuhnagelmaschine) sowie für die elektrische Branche. 1905 überraschte Alfred Ley, der älteste Sohn von Rudolf Ley, die Automobilbranche mit der Vorstellung eines Vierzylinder-Motorwagens. Ebenso mutig war die Erprobung eines Sechszylinders, der 1908 vorgestellt wurde, mit 2,6 Liter Hubraum ein ungewöhnlich kleines, kompaktes und dabei laufruhiges Aggregat. Sportliche Erfolge, u.a. bei Langstreckenrennen in Russland, bewiesen die Belastbarkeit der Ley-Motoren. Die Automobile wurden unter der Marke Loreley verkauft. Nach 1920 wurde die PKW-Produktion nur noch auf Sparflamme fortgesetzt, 1927 Umstellung auf Nutzfahrzeugbau (Schnelllastwagen). In der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1933 Umstellung der Produktion auf Kraftfahrzeugteile. Nach 1945 enteignet.
